Feeling Old-ish

I'm 26 and 1/2, I’m not a dinosaur, but today I felt old-ish.  I was talking to a co-worker of mine, he’s 24, which makes me roughly only 2.5 years older than him.  We were talking about dating.  No, not him and I, let me explain....he met a girl this past weekend at a bar.  I’d say he’s a shy guy, and in his words he’s “a giant pussy,” (please excuse my [his] language) so instead of asking for her number he left his number on a piece of paper and had his friend give it to her.  See, he wasn’t kidding with the “giant pussy” thing.  Okay, so that’s that, and now you’re up to speed.

So then comes today, co-worker and I, lets call him CW (co-worker, duh) were chatting about what’s next.  He told me that she hasn’t called yet and he really hopes that she does.  I replied that I hope she does too and that I think she really will but that she probably wont call during the day.  In his next breathe via fingertips he said these words to me “well hopefully she’ll just text.”  Ughhh really, CW?  A text?  I then ranted for a bit about how I think its weird if she texted instead of called.  This is when I began to feel old-ish.  I started to tell him that those beginning phone conversations with new people are incredibly exciting.  Spending hours on the phone sharing likes and dislikes, funny and not-so-funny stories, and learning the laughter and silent moments of someone new.  But no matter what I said, or how I phrased it, CW just wouldn’t hear of it.  He told me that no one spends hours on the phone talking anymore when they can just text.  How sad is that?  Old-ish kicked in.  “Kids these days” is all I could respond with.

Is it true that people don’t spend time talking on the phone?  How could this be?  They are missing out on so much.  You cant hear a laugh via text message and “lol” just doesn’t do.  You’re not candid you via text messaging.  You have a backspace, a delete.  An edited version of who you really are.  Dating really has changed so much within the last 10, maybe even 5 years, and I cant think of it as for the better.  But I guess that’s what happens, things change.  A text replaces a call and a call replaces a hand written letter.  I wonder what it was like to date then, way back then.  I bet it was simple.  You met and then you had to meet again, and again, and again.  That makes sense to me.  I was born late and maybe I am just trying to catch up.

Umbrella Etiquette

How do you survive a storm? Storms are wet and cold, and dark and dreary, so how do you survive? To navigate through, we use these things called "umbrellas." They help provide shelter and safety. They're a shield blocking out the bad to keep us dry, to keep us calm. So how do we properly use these "umbrellas" while others, our other, is using theirs. During a storm, how do we protect ourself AND walk in tandem with the one we love protecting their-self? There is no easy way to do this. Someone gets hurt, if not both, and we both end up wearing our storm. Some may think that the easiest solution is to get a bigger "umbrella" and stand under it together. Well, wouldn't that be just ideal. But the problem with umbrellas, is that it's usually VERY difficult to choose an umbrella that both find fitting or comfortable, especially during the middle of the storm. We tend to want to stick with our own "umbrellas" and not let what we solidly stand beneath go. So what now? Where do we go? We're both going to get wet- we both will, to some extent, suffer. How about this...what if we each tone down our "umbrellas"? I'm not saying to abandon them altogether with, but to make due with a little less. A smaller umbrella. Let's stand side by side, let's stand closer, let's stand together with our small umbrellas. Sure, we're going to experience a little of the storm but we'll be together. My umbrella will cover most of me and part of you, while yours covers most of you and part of me. Drier, closer- what we've wanted all along.

Tunneled Vision

Once in a while we see something that elates us so much that we never want that image to fade.  A permanent photograph in our mind, a snapshot to capture the time.  Today I was able to experience that feeling.  Of all the things that were occurring around me my body and mind fully focused on only one thing that was happening; tunneled vision.

There was a man and his dog.  They were riding the subway together.  A dapper older man dressed properly in tan slacks and a navy blazer.  Shoes and belt coordinating; tie and oxford shirt, a perfect match.  The most gorgeous German Shepherd I have ever seen; the shiniest black of coats worn by solid light brown eyes and a drippy leathery nose.  Of all the lovely details, each storybook perfect, my focus was less on the little and more on the large- the interaction between a man and his dog.  The man sitting down with his dogs body patiently parked underneath the seat still sitting tall with his head rested upon the mans left thigh, the mans left hand softly placed upon his dogs head; appearing as if the head of the dog grew from the mans lap, an extension of the mans own body.  They both looked comfortably normal as if they were in their living room watching television, and not in a crowded subway during the morning rush-hour.  They both sat, they both stared, neither seemed to blink.  His leathery nose dripped, no one seemed to mind.  I assumed he had a cold and his man was taking him to the veterinarian.  Man caring for his dog.  Dog finding comfort in his man.

Then the subway came to a stop at 23rd street.  The dog stood up first, then the man.

Dog lead his man off the subway safely into the open world, for he was his man's eyes.

The Ring

The ring is not something you get, it's something you earn. You both earn, together. Sure it's pretty, and sparkly, and it glistens when touched by light but that's not all it is. A ring, the ring, is not time passed. A ring, the ring, is moments passed.
All of those moments.
All of them survived.
With grace and centers held comes the ring. Not present because of the past counted by days and months and years; but present because of the past counted in laughter and tears and memories made, the best of the best and worst of the worst. The ring doesn't simply stand, it stands for something more.

A tip for timing...

Timing Is Everything.

When moods turn south, blossoms do wonders.
When nights get cold, firesides are cozy.
When work grinds down, champagne bubbles up.

How To Live Together

Laugh. Laugh all day. Laugh about everything and anything. Laugh so hard that your face hurts and your abs become defined. Laugh when things aren't funny, and laugh harder when they are...still no matter, what you must laugh, because if you don't laugh then you cry. After a fight, try to keep a straight face, tell yourself that you are playing a game. You know that game "who can be more serious right now?" Well play that and you'll end up laughing, and from laughter we end with smiles, and its hard to remain mad when you're smiling. When its all going wrong- like.ALL.going.wrong- and nothing you do can stop it I want you to say this "We're like clowns." Stand there, look at the mess you've helplessly made, shake your head and say it out loud. There is no better medicine. When you laugh you are most attractive and welcoming. Welcome laugh lines and crows feet with open arms. Its true what they say, laughter is contagious. Let it spread.

Windows Are Rolled Down- Amos Lee

An unsinkable ship.

There are a few certain people who resonate, spark, ignite.  Not once then die out, but forever burn, lit, aflame.  Friends precious like stones.  We can go a day a month a year then suddenly back to where we were.  Little things along the way remind me of you and our ship.  That ship will always be unsinkable.  We're on parallels, always were.  Same language spoken.  Same cloth, the cut.

Buried in arms.

You know those few minutes right before you fall asleep, where youre in between day and night, wake and sleep...I was there and so were you. Been working hard on my willpower, knowing that I should. And it's so difficult when the right thing to do and what you want to do are contradictory. Find inner strength; fight inner strength. Every word ever said lingering. You were real. You are appreciated. It was never a "we" or an "us" but it was. Snowglobed-firsts, lightless-rooms, plantearium-fauxdates. Books, tons of books. Oh, and Derrick or Derek, the same but different; we've always been.

Mid-road-reality

And there I was, just like the story I read out loud last night, stuck in the middle of the woods. I could go one way or the other, both entirely separate routes. Mid-road-reality; the only place to actually exist. To be selfish or graceful, its now or never. I chose the high road, I let you talk. I said my piece then you said yours. This grace thing is killing me but all hard work pays off, right?

A Timeline

Just a little something interesting for my fellow book nerds...

Timeline.

Move me.

Today is Thursday.  Thursdays are good days.  Today is a good day.  Maybe Incubus was right, "My greatest fear will be the rescue of me, strange how it turns out that way."  Train, oh train, dear el-eye-double-are.  Who would have thought that it was you that was missing from me?  A place to get my thoughts out and down, not down and out.  Complaining about you for months but how could I?  You take me, you move me, you transport me to my most favorite place.  Literally and figuratively.  A busy place for a busy mind somehow creates peace.  Lovely little contradictions.

Groundhog Day

Today is Groundhog Day...oh, what a fantastic movie.  Anyway, the groundhog decided to show up today and told us (yes, actually said in English, maybe Spanish, but probably French, as he was definitely wearing a beret,) that we will be seeing Spring very soon.  I think I've fallen for that little beret-wearing-baguette-eating rodent.

Although this post is for all to enjoy, it is specifically dedicated to my very best friend, a fellow SAD sufferer.  No more winter blues baby.  With perfect teeth, the way we are.

Grace

Its three which means there are two to go.  Its amazing to think about the weight of words.  Words change thoughts.  Words change feelings.  Words change everything.  Mine caught above my shoulders, circling
like sharks.  Released to grace paper that will never be delivered.  Grace; maybe that is grace.  To think, then to feel, only to rethink, and to revise.  Wise words once said, "We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation."  It was about me and my and I because of you.  Solely focused on the former not the latter.  The sun doesn't know its just a star.  Shining so brightly but with no vision that its not the only one.  Then came your words, words that Ive shared before, therefore hitting home.  Home, yes home, our home.  No longer about me and my and I, I finally thought of you.  A calming sense of your needs put my circling words to rest.  Naturally, organically, without thought or work.  Things in perspective; all things where they belong.  To understand and empathize is the highest of the arts.  Art that's not created nor learned, just there to put the uneasy at ease.

inspired

And the last you heard was just how uninspired I was by all that surrounds me. Well there is one thing, one flame of inspiration these days. Not a place but a person. Una palabra. Inspiration bundled up into a body, a soul. One that rests his head to my left day in and day out; oh, how lucky am I? You know who you are, more karma-careful than Buddha. Inspiring me to do the right things, say sorry when I am wrong, be fair to those around me. You wake with contagious smiles and fall asleep with infectious laughter. Always wearing even-keeled well. Nicer, kinder, happier; thank you.

uninspired

Its been so long since I've actually written, since I've actually cared to write at all. It saddens me that I have little around me that inspires me right now. I shouldn't complain but I'm going to...I miss the crisp, dirty city air, I miss forever-sunny Brooklyn, I miss the overcrowded subways, I miss the people, all of them. Music, new music, every.single.day. Sick of this cookie-cutter-cultureless-island. I miss seeing something new everyday. Feeling something new, hearing something new, smelling something new. Something that touches my soul. I miss my friends and my enemies. I miss souvlaki at 3am and Thai food on a whim. I miss Craigslist missed connections and the commonplace of whiskey. Cowboy boots & hot pretzels. I want to walk outside and actually feel my surroundings. Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in.
